Compulsory Basic Training is a legal requirement. It will enable you to ride your motorcycle on public roads as a learner. This course introduces you to basic riding skills and will form the foundation of all your future training.

  • Your Driving licence – If you have the old paper licence, you will need to bring photo ID to take the CBT, a passport is ideal.
  • If you are using your own machine you will need to bring your insurance certificate and MOT if applicable, the machine also needs to be taxed. If you need glasses for driving bring them, we will need to test your eyesight..
  • If you haven’t got proper motorcycle clothing we advise you wear jeans or strong trousers, flat boots, no steel toe caps (remember you need to feel the controls with your feet on a geared bike), and wear a sturdy jacket.
  • A packed lunch or some money to get some.

For all courses we suggest that you read; ‘The highway Code’, and ‘Motorcycle Riding, The Essential Skills’, published by the DSA.

All riders must pass a theory test before they can take their practical test. A theory test is not needed for the completion of a C.B.T. (Compulsory Basic Training).

You can book your test yourself by ringing 0300 200 1122 or on www.dsa.gov.uk

(Direct Access Scheme) The Direct Access Course is taken on a 500 cc motorcycle and on completion you will have no power restrictions and can ride any motorcycle of any size. You can only do this course if you are 21 or over.
